Condensate Drain Not Working? Common Causes and Fixes

Clogged Strainer or Inlet

Condensate often carries rust, oil, dirt and pipe scale. These contaminants can block the strainer or inlet passage. If the drain does not discharge, isolate the unit safely and inspect for blockage.

Valve Failure

Drain valves can stick open or closed. A valve stuck closed allows water to accumulate. A valve stuck open wastes compressed air. Both conditions should be corrected quickly.

Power or Control Problem

Timer drains and electronic drains require power and correct control settings. Check voltage, wiring, timer settings and alarm indicators. Incorrect timing may discharge too often or not often enough.

Incorrect Installation

Drains should be installed where condensate can flow into them. Poor pipe routing, blocked discharge lines or incorrect orientation can prevent reliable operation.

High Contamination Load

If drains fail repeatedly, the problem may be upstream contamination. Excessive oil, rust or dirt may indicate poor filtration, old piping or separator problems.
