Identify the Contaminants

Compressed air may contain liquid water, oil aerosol, solid particles, pipe scale, desiccant dust or oil vapor. Each contaminant requires a suitable filter type. A general particulate filter cannot replace a coalescing filter, and an oil vapor removal filter cannot solve bulk liquid water problems alone.

Choose the Correct Filter Grade

Pre-filters remove larger particles and liquid carryover. Fine coalescing filters remove smaller oil aerosols and water mist. Activated carbon filters are used where oil vapor or odor control is required. Dust filters are commonly installed after desiccant dryers.

Match Flow Rate and Pressure

Filters must be sized for actual flow. Undersized filters create high pressure drop and waste energy. Oversized filters may cost more than necessary. Buyers should provide flow rate, working pressure and connection size.

Consider Dryer Protection

Before a refrigerated air dryer, filtration helps reduce liquid and particle load. Before a desiccant air dryer, filtration is even more critical because oil and water can damage desiccant.

Pressure Drop Matters

Every filter creates resistance. Excessive pressure drop forces the compressor to work harder. Replace elements regularly and choose filters with suitable capacity.
